Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, the question is always, “Do we do it ourselves or hire a pro?”
Sure, you can save some money by doing it all yourself, assuming all goes smoothly with that rental truck, and you’re not moving too far, and you’re in excellent physical condition.
But there’s a comprimise that might work better for many people – do some stuff yourself and hire a pro for the rest. Do the packing and unpacking yourself, but have a pro do the loading, unloading, and transport of the move.
Although professional movers can do everything for you, when it comes to packing all your worldly possessions, there’s a good reason to do this yourself. This is a great opportunity to cull through all your stuff and unload things you haven’t used in years and that have no real value to you.
You can donate, sell, or trash items that you no longer want to keep. This will lighten your load and reduce the job of moving somewhat. As you do this, pack all items that you intend to keep, in this order;
- stuff you rarely use
- stuff you use once in awhile
- stuff you use everyday
Time this so you are packing the last type a day or two before the move.
At the end of the day, the cost is probably the most important issue when considering your move. If you have plenty of money, hire a moving company to do it all. If you’re on a tight budget and have the abilities, consider doing it all yourself. If you’re somewhere in between, consider doing part of it yourself and hiring movers for the rest.
