If you’re thinking of moving this year, there are some things you can do in advance that can help you save yourself from a number of pitfalls in the future. Here they are:

Start early

Start making those lists even before you’re on the prowl for a new home. The first thing we suggest that you pack up are the things you don’t use regular. Things like extra/seasonal clothes and decorations. Pack that stuff up now so you don’t have to worry about it when you have more pressing matters to attend to.

Second, you should clean out the things you don’t need. Donate them to people in need or even post them online for sale. The sale piece is compelling because it’s cash that might come in handy later.

And believe it or not – as you go through this process it’s going to help you make your first big moving decision: Will you need movers, a truck or a van? Depending on what’s packed and what’s gone – what belongs you have that remain will likely give you a much clearer picture of what kind of move you need to be thinking about.

Get organized, stay organized

For the things you know you’ll move, start pairing them off in boxes and getting them ready to move. Begin labeling boxes and containers that will be filled and used later. Put a list of what goes to what room and why. And maybe most importantly – pack smart by coming up with a system that lets movers know what’s fragile and what needs to be handled with a little extra care!

Pack Smart

What we mean by ‘packing smart’ is ‘thinking outside the box quite literally.’ Don’t just rely on boxes. Inventory your containers, suitcases, duffel bags, laundry baskets and other things that you already have that will help you move things from one place to another. While you’ll inevitably need boxes, they also create trash. This will help cut down on that.

Also move dresser drawers with clothes in them , you can cover hanging clothes, move closet clothes with rubber hangers – there’s any number of ways to move things a little smarter and cut down on the things you’ll need movers to handle.

Prepare the other side

One of the most commonly overlooked things in moves is that once the transaction is complete – people don’t do a walkthrough of their soon-to-be-homes. Take a walk through, clean, get an idea of where you want everything to go and have things placed so you can put things away as soon as possible after your move. It’s also the best time to install those extra shelves of add a coat of paint. Do your ‘scouting’ work ahead of time and it can prevent headaches later on.
